Project title:

GOLDEN MINDS ON FIRE

Research question

Study of the fire effects on the soil environment and the atmosphere in the region of Eastern Macedonia in August 2023. Is there a correlation of the phenomenon with climate change?

Identify the local environmental/climate problem you want to investigate

During the summer season of 2023, specifically in August, in the region of Eastern Macedonia occurred several incidents of fire. More specifically, these incidents, which happened in the areas of Avramilia, Stegno, New xerias, Dialecto, Damaskinia, Gerontas, Eclecto, appeared to have caused many damages to livestock facilities, buildings, land and affected negatively significant part of the flora and the ecosystem. In addition, the burden on the atmosphere was noticeable and lasted for several days.

Describe how you plan to investigate the problem identified and which data you plan to analyse.

In the case of the fire incidents in the region of Eastern Macedonia we decided to conduct research through which we intent to initially study the effects of the fire incidents on the wider environment and then try to understand if climate change is responsible for these incidents and to what extent. For the conduct of the research, we will use satellite images produced by the sensors of various satellites, such as Sentinel 1, Sentinel 2, Sentinel 3, Sentinel 5P and Landsat 8-9 through the EO Browser online platform.
The initial research will focus on choosing the appropriate satellite images of these regions’ surface land before and after the fire, in order to accumulate the necessary information to observe and estimate the amount of burned area. The multiple comparison of different satellites images will provide us data for the observation of regional surface soil and the change of flora before and after the burning, as well as the atmospheric emissions of gaseous pollutants such as CO, NO2 caused by the intense fire. Eventually, in order to study the possible connection of the incidents of fire to the climate change, there will be research of moisture and temperature level of the soil during the same month of the last two years at least.

Is the suggested problem a problem that the students can actually investigate? Is it feasible, realistic? Please explain why or why not. Is the relation with climate/local environment worked out? Where necessary indicate the wider scientific context to which the identified problem belongs.
