Project title:

Rainfalls and drought variations in our area

Research question

Select data and study the variation of rainfalls and periods of drought the last 30 years in the area of Thessaloniki Greece.

Identify the local environmental/climate problem you want to investigate

The latest years we have very intensive rainfalls and long periods with drought. There is a question if this phenomenon is due to climate change.

Project topic

Climate change

Describe how you plan to investigate the problem identified and which data you plan to analyse.

The students will collect data on the frequency and intensity of rainfall, as well as periods of drought in the greater area of Thessaloniki over a period of twenty to thirty years. Drought periods will also be associated with moisture index data collected through the EO browser. They will do statistical processing of the data and their presentation in time series. They will detect any changes in the frequency and intensity of rainfall and investigate the correlation of these changes with climate change and global warming.
They will choose a city of similar size to Thessaloniki located at roughly the same latitude and investigate drought periods with moisture index data collected through the EO browser over twenty to thirty years. They will do statistical processing of the data and their presentation in time series. They will detect any changes in the frequency of droughts and investigate the correlation of these changes with climate change and global warming.
Finally, they will propose practices that we can apply in our daily lives in order to reduce the effects of global warming and climate change.

Your feedback

Expert feedback Phase 1 - 2023-2024
Is the suggested problem a problem that the students can actually investigate? Is it feasible, realistic? Please explain why or why not. Is the relation with climate/local environment worked out? Where necessary indicate the wider scientific context to which the identified problem belongs.
