Preserve the Plain-Climate Resilience and Water Management
Terrestrial degradation and infertility due to excessive flooding in a lakeside enviroment. Climate change versus human error.
Identify the local environmental/climate problem you want to investigate
The qualitative and quantitative deterioration of crops produced in the Thessalian plain has been a major problem in the last years, due to climate change and seasonal shift. On top of that, recent extreme weather phenomena revealed the lack of our providence in securing life and property. There has been a common belief that suppressing the natural water tracks provides more land to the people, hence more wealth. Is this to our greatest benefit or is it too big a risk to undertake? We examine the extent that poor harvesting and land degradation consist nature’s payback to our short-sighted water management.
Describe how you plan to investigate the problem identified and which data you plan to analyse.
Exploit EO Browser’s satellite data on vegetation, land moisture and water coverage over the years.
Acquisition of data regarding crops’ quality and production through cooperation with local authories.
