Project title:

Mining in the Blötberg mine – then, now and in the future!

Research question

How has mining historically and recently affected the environment in Ludvika municipality, and what measures can minimize the environmental impact in the event of a reopening of the Blötberg mine?

Identify the local environmental/climate problem you want to investigate

Mining has historically been a major industry in the area we live in – Ludvika municipality. There are now plans to reopen a mine – the Blötberg Mine.
We want to investigate how mining has affected the environment around the mine in the past, now and how it may affect the environment in the event of a future opening and come up with proposals for efforts to prevent or minimize environmental impact.

Project topic

Describe how you plan to investigate the problem identified and which data you plan to analyse.

We want to investigate:
– the topography of the area as well as the geology to get an idea of catchment areas.
-See on old aerial photos and maps how the industrial area has changed over time.
-Look at maps and read material about where the landfill areas are located and what the emission levels look like there.
-See on vegetation maps how the vegetation looks and has changed in the area.
-look on maps and read how they plan the new mining
