Project title:

Estudio sobre los humedales del Ebro y propuestas de protección.

Research question

How is climate change affecting the ecosystem of Ebro’s wetlands?

Identify the local environmental/climate problem you want to investigate

We plan to analyze the effects of the drought that Spain is suffering in the Ebro’s wetlands. For this we will carry out a multidisciplinary study, focused on 3 points. Control of the Climate building a climate station, study of the water level in relation to rainfall, analysis of water quality and study and classification of vegetation and fauna.

Project topic

Floods & droughts

Describe how you plan to investigate the problem identified and which data you plan to analyse.

To establish the relationship between the water level, the level of the Ebro river and rainfall, we will use the Sentinel-2 NDWI through the Copernicus open access hub to establish the area occupied by the water surface, the Ebro flow data through from the Ebro’s Automatic Hydrological Information System and data from our local weather station and through AEMET to obtain the monthly amount of water in mm.
On the other hand, we will carry out monthly analyzes of water quality, measuring Ph, electrical conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and nitrogen.
Finally, we will carry out a classification of the species of fauna and vegetation that sustains the wetland through direct observations, camera traps, nets for invertebrates and Sentinel 2 moisture and vegetation indexs.

Your feedback

Expert feedback Phase 1 - 2023-2024
Is the suggested problem a problem that the students can actually investigate? Is it feasible, realistic? Please explain why or why not. Is the relation with climate/local environment worked out? Where necessary indicate the wider scientific context to which the identified problem belongs.
