Research question
How does climate change influence the behavior of migratory birds and animals that hibernate in our area?
Summary of the project
We live in Andalusia, a passageway and habitat for many migratory birds, which travel between Europe and Africa according to the seasons of the year. We observe how certain changes occur in the behavior of migratory birds such as swallows, which arrive in the Iberian Peninsula up to a month earlier than normal in spring. We have also read, and we want to analyze it, that these changes are even more pronounced in birds that live in our cities, because cities act as heat islands.
We will also try to analyze whether there have been changes in the behavior of reptiles and amphibians that hibernate during the winter, for example, reducing this hibernation period due to increased temperatures.
Main results and Conclusions
Poster of our research (in Spanish)
Migratory birds have advanced their arrival dates in Spain by more than 10 days.
Some reptiles now have longer periods of activity.
These changes can produce important modifications in the ecosystems of these animals.
What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
We will show the results to the educational community, participating in a science fair.
We will continue to study the behavior of the animals that live near our school.
