Our team studied the change of the coastline, the reduction of the width of the beaches due to erosion. This coastal erosion causes the irreversible retreat of the coastline.
We found information on the impact of climate change on erosive action and its consequences; Îamely how increased temperatures can lead to droughts and floods, while extreme weather conditions might accelerate the erosion process, as well as an increase in the frequency and intensity of storms can lead to an increase in water estuary and hydrological erosion.
We also studied the impacts of climate change on the Pikrodafni stream (which passes through Alimos and flows to the beach), how extreme weather conditions cause changes in the water current and its overall dynamics, in the stream ecosystem, in the reduction of biodiversity, damage to buildings and infrastructure around the stream. The stream of Picrodafni originates from the Western side of Hymettos, making its way into into the sea, on the borders of Palaio Faliro and Kalamaki. The hydrological basin in which the river is formed covers a total area of 22.4 kmÂČ and an average altitude of 260 m, which ensures the flow of water up to sea level. The stream of Picrodafni is about 9.3 kilometers long.
We used the research from âDIANEOSISâ titled âIncorporating climate change in the transformation of the development model of Greeceâ attended by professors of the National Kapodistrian University.
In addition, we processed data on rainfall and temperatures from the measurements of meteo.gr (National Observatory of Athens) from 2015 and we created related graphs.
Using satellite images from EO Browser of the coastline of Alimos and the Pikrodafni stream we created videos shots at different times with the help of sentinel-2 and Landsat satellites with a tool Normalized Water Index (NDWI), which is the most suitable for mapping water bodies .

According to the research titled âIncorporating climate change into the transformation of the development model of Greeceâ by âdiaNEOsisâ, there will be a significant increase in temperature in Athens in the future and although the estimates of the regional models for the future periods are mainly related to a decrease in rainfall on an annual basis, in urban areas an important parameter is the extreme rates of the amount of rain which, especially during the winter and transitional periods, can lead to flooding phenomena related to loss of life and material damage.
Our research has focused on the impact of climate change on erosion, highlighting the complexity of the processes associated with this issue. Soil loss due to erosive action can affect urban infrastructure, while water quality degradation -due to hydrological erosion- can have serious consequences for the health of the population and flood phenomena can lead to a risk of disaster.
Specifically, the impact of climate change on coasts is the degradation of the beach, the loss of infrastructure, floods, exposed infrastructure and loss of ecosystems.
The effects of climate change on the Pikrodafni stream are streamline changes in flow, floods and droughts, loss of biodiversity and property damage.
With the graphs from the data we visualized the amounts of rainfall.
We also visualized the extreme conditions outlook in the Pikrodafni stream with the EO browser using the Normalized Water Index (NDWI). ΀he condition at the mouth of the stream is noticeable and big mainly during the winter months, while the changes in the width of the specific coast that we studied from 2017 onwards are not noticeable. Generally the changes in the visualization of the coastline from 1975 onwards can be seen. With commitment, collaboration and innovation, we can meet the challenge of climate change and promote a more sustainable and fair future for all.
In our school we run a paper recycling program with special recycling bins.
Our team carried out recycling of plastic bottles at a special stand of the Municipality.
We also cleaned the public beach of Alimos to raise awareness among the rest of the citizens. https://www.notia.gr/2024/04/%ce%b7-%ce%b5%ce%b8%ce%b5%ce%bb%ce%bf%ce%bd%cf%84%ce%b9%ce%ba%ce%ae-%cf%80%ce%b5%cf%81%ce%b9%ce%b2%ce%b1%ce%bb%ce%bb%ce%bf%ce%bd%cf%84%ce%b9%ce%ba%ce%ae-%ce%bf%ce%bc%ce%ac%ce%b4%ce%b1-%cf%84%ce%bf/?fbclid=IwAR3ErE8B0yTUumQ33gMuaVdgwNQgiTC7x6sOf2HuYn-QI0X6As-N7wiovQg_aem_AfY5c-aW_MTWECMGeh72ZDfUhePlYOp4OIntjgQWS_3OLDVym6A9ZA0AH6O7OZHGhmTAHâ5kOkC2yymIEYAmuQP
In addition, we came in contact with the Mayor of Agios Dimitrios as he presented a Proposal for the creation of the Picrodafni Stream Protection Agency, at the 3rd SPAY FORUM 2024 (Association for the Protection and Development of Ymittos). He explained to us his proposal for cooperation with the municipalities that the stream passes through ( Ilioupolis, Alimos, Palaio Faliro) and the Regional authorities of Attica with the aim of creating a linear park that will also function as an environmental, walking and educational route and arrive at a solution to the problem of the stream which is linked to civil protection in the event of severe flooding. There will be a scheduled meeting of all these agencies to face the problem of the stream of Picrodafni. Also the need of contribution of the other municipalities to know-how and artificial intelligence in forecasting and studying the evolution of an extreme weather phenomenon was noted.

A factor in the vulnerability of urban areas to flooding is the percentage of land covered by impervious materials, which prevents the natural absorption of rainwater by the soil. We could help planting trees around the stream or in any other place in our area, to this end.
To deal with the high temperatures, a suitable remodeling of the school could be done which includes planting in the yard, creating a green roof, forming sunshades and a green wall on the sides of the school with the aim of reducing absorbed solar radiation and consequently ground surface and overhead air temperatures .
