The advance of the sea has been a constant concern over time in the town of Quarteira. Climate change (namely the increase in the greenhouse effect) has had, is having and may come to have an influence on the local population’s way of life regarding two of the main local activities: fishing (biodiversity) and tourism. Thus, we addressed the influence of the rise in the average sea level on the way of life of the population of Quarteira. To do so, we analysed satellite images in time-lapse, using the EO Browser, making a comparative study of the rise in the average sea level in Quarteira. We validated these data with data from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere regarding tides on the days/hours of the selected images (to decrease the analysis error). For these analyses, we had the support of LS Geographic Engineering.
We interviewed fishermen and businessmen linked to tourism in the fishing town to understand if the changes in the average sea level had impacts in their sectors and we made a field trip guided by Professor Óscar Ferreira, an expert in coastal dynamics from the University of Algarve, about the dynamics of the coastline in the southern Portuguese zone. During the field trip we were able to validate in situ some of the recent satellite images, previously observed in class, it helped us to understand how the beaches are formed, especially the one in Quarteira, and all the work that has already been done to mitigate the advance of the sea.
O avanço do mar tem sido uma preocupação constante ao longo do tempo na cidade de Quarteira. As alterações climáticas (nomeadamente o aumento do efeito de estufa) tiveram, têm e poderão vir a ter influência no modo de vida da população local relativamente a duas das principais atividades locais: a pesca (biodiversidade) e o turismo. Assim, abordámos a influência da subida do nível médio das águas do mar no modo de vida da população de Quarteira. Para isso, analisámos imagens de satélite em time-lapse, recorrendo ao EO Browser fazendo um estudo comparativo da subida do nível médio das águas do mar em Quarteira. Validámos esses dados com dados do Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera relativos às marés nos dias/horas das imagens selecionadas (para diminuir o erro de análise). Para estas análises, contámos com o apoio da LS Engenharia Geográfica.
Realizámos entrevistas a pescadores e empresários ligados ao turismo na cidade pesca para perceber se as alterações no nível médio das águas do mar tiveram impactos nos seus setores e fizemos uma saída de campo orientada pelo professor Óscar Ferreira, especialista em dinâmica costeira da Universidade do Algarve, sobre a dinâmica do litoral na zona sul portuguesa. Na saída de campo pudemos validar in situ algumas das imagens de satélite recentes, observadas previamente em sala de aula, ajudou-nos a perceber como se formam as praias, em especial a de Quarteira, e todo o trabalho que já foi feito para mitigar o avanço do mar.
With the analysis of the satellite images, validated during the field trip, we could see that the Quarteira beach, in the past, was fed by the erosion of the cliffs of Falésia beach. With the construction of the Vilamoura marina and the fishing harbour, the sand transport was interrupted because they are obstacles to the sediment circulation. The effects of the lack of sand have accelerated the erosion and, together with the increase of the NMAM, the retreat of the coast has been up to 3 m/year in the eastern part. Talking to local fishermen, they consider that the increase in water temperature and acidity has altered the life cycle of fish. They mentioned that the amount of fish available has been decreasing over the years, either due to fishing effort, food availability or changes in the underwater flora. When asked whether or not there are new species or the disappearance of others, related to climate change, they replied that there are changes. For example, the blue crab, the balloon fish and some species of warm water fish are beginning to fall into the nets. Thus we conclude that in the fishermen’s view there are changes in the ocean that affect fishing, mainly the warming of the water.
As for the work of resurfacing the beaches and building basins, this is well regarded by local entrepreneurs, as they are fully aware that it is the way to maintain the beaches and continue with tourism activities. The fishermen, on the other hand, feel reticent about this strategy because they fear that the extraction of sand will affect marine ecosystems.
We cannot stand by and do nothing. We need to re-nourish the beaches, but we also need to change our own behaviour to reduce our individual impact on climate change.
Com a análise das imagens de satélite, validadas durante a saída de campo, pudemos constatar que a praia de Quarteira, no passado, era alimentada pela erosão das arribas da praia da Falésia. Com a construção da marina de Vilamoura e do porto de pesca o transporte das areias foi interrompido pois estas construções são obstáculos à circulação de sedimentos. Os efeitos da falta de areia aceleraram a erosão e, juntamente com a subida do NMAM, o recuo da costa chegou a ser de 3 m/ano na zona mais a este. As soluções encontradas para interromper este ciclo foram a construção de pontões e a realimentação da praia
Falando com os pescadores locais, estes consideram que o aumento da temperatura e da acidez das águas alteraram o ciclo de vida dos peixes. Referiram que a quantidade de peixes disponíveis tem diminuído ao longo dos anos, seja pelo esforço de pesca, pela disponibilidade de alimento ou pela alteração da flora subaquática. Quando questionados sobre a existência ou não de espécies novas ou o desaparecimento de outras, relacionado com as alterações climáticas, responderam que existem alterações. Por exemplo, o caranguejo azul, o peixe balão e algumas espécies de peixes de águas quentes começam a cair nas redes. Concluímos assim, que, na visão dos pescadores, verificam-se alterações no oceano que afetam a pesca, principalmente o aquecimento da água.
Quanto ao trabalho de realimentação das praias e construção de porões, este é bem visto pelos empresários locais, pois têm plena consciência de que é a única forma de manter as praias e continuar com as atividades turísticas. Já os pescadores sentem-se reticentes quanto a esta estratégia pois receiam que a extração de areia afete os ecossistemas marinhos.
Todos concordam que não podemos ficar de braços cruzados. É necessário realimentar as praias, mas também alterarmos os nossos comportamentos diminuindo o impacto individual nas alterações climáticas.
Information and knowledge are the best actions we can take as citizens. Thus, it is important to promote the acquisition of scientific knowledge in the local community.
Thus, we intend to disseminate our study among local authorities (Quarteira Parish Council and Loulé Municipal Council) and the population, promoting participation in information sessions that will raise people’s awareness of climate change and their individual actions.

Assim, pretendemos divulgar o nosso estudo junto das entidades de poder local (Junta de Freguesia de Quarteira e Câmara Municipal de Loulé) e da população, promovendo a participação em sessões informativas que fomentem a conscientização das pessoas sobre as mudanças climáticas e sobre as suas ações individuais.
