Research question

Consequences of overfishing?

Summary of the project
Overfishing

Overfishing is known as overfishing of fish or shellfish by humans. This
This phenomenon began to occur in the 20th century and is a danger to the environment, since it causes
major imbalances in marine ecosystems.

Overfishing poses a great threat to marine biodiversity and ecological balance.
The data is worrying. According to the FAO, more than 80% of the fish stocks for which data exist
they are exploited.
The abundance of large predators such as cod, tuna and swordfish has decreased by 90%. Yeah
we continue fishing at the current rate scientists estimate that by 2048 all kinds of fish will have disappeared
fish in the sea.
Our seas are vulnerable and sensitive and a major and sudden change in the number of specimens
of a species can exert great pressure on its ecological environment and a change in the balance of
oceans, and even in the food chain of other species.

Main results and Conclusions
Damage at sea

Illegal fishing or deep-sea trawling are two major problems that increase the overexploitation of the marine world. In the latter case, we are talking about a very destructive, unsustainable fishing technique: the large nets of these ships drag the ocean floor, destroying and trapping everything in their path. Of what is captured, between 30% and 60% correspond to species that have been caught accidentally. Everything is thrown overboard.

What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
STOP

Overfishing, as well as the loss of fish habitats, marine pollution and climate change, is negatively affecting marine species at a devastating rate.
The solution lies in drastically reducing the intensity of fishing in the world fleet , managing fishing quotas with criteria of environmental and social sustainability and making greater use of aquaculture and fish farms .
In conclusion , overfishing will have disastrous consequences unless we all act to protect marine species .
Even we, as consumers, can help by buying sustainably sourced seafood and raising awareness among friends and family.
And because marine pollution and climate change are just as bad for our oceans, we must move toward a greener way of life.
