Climate Detectives Projects 2022-2023
Project title: Climate change, sea level and tourism in Rethymnon.
Team: 3rd Junior High School

will the climate change cause a sea level rise?
We want to examine whether the area of the sea is increasing at the expense of the land. We are interested in examining it because it may affect tourism in Rethymno and Crete. Questions that arise and we want to consider.
A) Will the beach of Rethymno change, if so will it increase or decrease and over what period of time? Will there be less umbrellas and sunbeds, will fewer tourists be served?
B) Are our seaside hotels, shops and tourist activities at risk? How much further inside will the sea be and if we should start building further away.
C) Will we need to look for houses further from the sea?
D) Does it concern us, our parents or our children? How soon will we have the change?
We looked at satellite images to check of sea level changes as well as testimonies from older local residents who can give us information from an earlier period than the satellite images. We got these satellite data from NASA or ESA-ESERO, in collaboration with AUTH, the University of Crete and the local KPE (Vamou, Chania, etc.).
Furthermore, we also checked for emissions of gases into the atmosphere related to the greenhouse effect and whether their composition has changed, such as carbon dioxide.
There is a change at the coastline of Rethymno area. There is significant change at the emissions of gases into the atmosphere related to the greenhouse effect and whether their composition has changed, such as carbon dioxide.
However we could determine the speed of this process and how fast it will happen.
Unfortunately, we cannot significantly intervene in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but we can change the way we live and reduce our own ecological footprint. We must immediately change our lifestyle and recycle. However, because recycling also has an environmental cost, it is important to immediately start reusing products and integrate it into our everyday life. In order for us and future generations to understand this need, we must first get in touch with nature and love it. Then let’s see through experiments the effects of climate change. Then do recycling and reuse activities. Let’s finally complain to the government about climate change.
