To investigate if there is air pollution in the industrial area of Canelas (Vila Nova de Gaia), to analyse if there is an impact on the air quality in this area and in the surroundings, namely in Valadares, and how this can be harmful to the climate. After analysing the concentration values obtained by satellite, the students concluded the following:
Although the data collected by satellites were obtained with the location of the industrial zone of Canelas, Vila Nova de Gaia, in reality they refer to the entire northern region of Portugal and in particular to Greater Porto, since the gases are fluid and therefore expand over a large area surrounding the source of pollution, which is concentrated more in the more urban areas, such as Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, i.e. the data are not exclusively for the Canelas industrial zone.
It was found not only that there were consecutive days and even weeks of concentration of pollutant gases equal to or greater than the limit value plus margin of tolerance, but also, often, following these days of very high pollution, there were days of concentration values below the limit value, which led the students to conclude that possibly this sudden change of pollution was due to the high rainfall that dissolved a good part of the pollutant gases in the atmosphere, which infiltrated as acid rain in the soil, rivers and sea, contributing to its acidification.
Após análise dos valores da concentração obtida por satélite, os alunos concluíram o seguinte:
Embora os dados recolhidos por satélites tenham sido obtidos com a localização da zona industrial de Canelas, Vila Nova de Gaia, na realidade referem-se a toda a região Norte de Portugal e em especial ao Grande Porto, uma vez que os gases são fluídos e por isso expandem-se por uma grande área envolvente à fonte de poluição, que se concentra mais nas zonas mais urbanas, como Porto e Vila Nova de Gaia, ou seja, os dados não são exclusivamente da zona industrial de Canelas.
Verificou-se, não só que havia dias e até semanas consecutivas de concentração de gases poluentes igual ou superior ao valor limite mais margem de tolerância, como ainda, frequentemente, a seguir a esses dias de poluição muito elevada, ocorreram dias de valores de concentração inferior ao valor limite o que levou os alunos a concluir que possivelmente essa alteração brusca de poluição se tenha devido à elevada pluviosidade que terá dissolvido uma boa parte dos gases poluentes da atmosfera, que se infiltraram como chuvas ácidas nos solos, rios e mar, contribuindo para a sua acidificação.

Bringing down the cost of urban public transport;
Increase control of industrial pollution.
On a private level, the students will try to raise awareness in society, starting with the family, with measures that could contribute to the reduction of pollutant gases:
opt for public transport, walk and cycle more, avoiding the use of motorised vehicles;
save electricity;
Opt for the use of solar energy for domestic water heating;
reduce beef consumption;
not to waste food;
reduce the volume of waste produced.
Os alunos tentaram desenvolver ações para reduzir os problemas de poluição detetados, nomeadamente, contactar por e-mail, o Departamento do Ambiente e Parques Urbanos de Vila Nova de Gaia, com o objetivo de saber se têm conhecimento destes níveis de poluição, e em caso afirmativo, que medidas estão a ser tomadas no sentido de reduzir a concentração de gases poluentes.
Até ao momento, ainda não se obteve resposta, pelo que os alunos irão tentar contactar novamente o Departamento do Ambiente ou o Município e caso seja necessário, irão propor medidas que contribuam para a redução da emissão destes gases poluentes, nomeadamente:
aumentar o número de ciclovias e disponibilizar bicicletas e trotinetes grátis para a população;
Aumentar a cobertura e frequência de transportes públicos;
Diminuir o custo dos transportes públicos urbanos;
Aumentar o controlo da poluição industrial.
A nível particular, os alunos tentarão sensibilizar a sociedade, começando pela família, com medidas que poderão contribuir para a redução dos gases poluentes, designadamente:
optar por transportes públicos, andar mais a pé e de bicicleta, evitando o uso de veículos motorizados;
economizar energia elétrica;
Optar pela utilização de energia solar para o aquecimento de águas domésticas;
reduzir o consumo de carne bovina;
não desperdiçar alimentos;
reduzir o volume de lixo produzido.
