Project title: LIGHT POLLUTION IN BENALMÁDENA
Team: The Light of Darkness
IES Ibn Al Baytar Benalmádena Spain 24 Student’s age: 14-15 years old
How does light pollution affect our town?
In the first phase, the students investigated what light is, what light pollution is, how it affects ecosystems, animals and humans and how to achieve sustainable lighting. Once the concepts were understood, the second phase consisted of the pupils going out into the street to take photographs of the street lamps in our town using defraction plates to obtain data on the predominant type of light. Finally, the third phase consists of presenting a petition to the town council to change the street lamps that consume the most energy and affect light pollution and to request a “night of stars” to be able to observe the Perseids from any point in our town.
We still have two night outings pending to get more data from the streetlights, but Benalmádena is definitely a town with high light pollution. This affects the inhabitants of our town and prevents us from enjoying the sky. We hope that the town council will take our request into account to achieve a more sustainable lighting and a “night of stars” once a year.
We will present a petition to the town hall to request LED streetlights for the streets that do not have them yet. In this way, we will contribute to improving the health of our neighbours and saving energy in our town.
We will also include in the petition the request to establish “star time” in Benalmádena. We will ask the town council that, on one of the nights when there is a Perseids star shower (August 11th, for example), the lights in our town will be switched off so that we can enjoy this marvellous phenomenon.
