The Albufera of Valencia is a place of great cultural interest and was declared a natural park in 1986 by the Generalitat Valenciana. Every year it receives more than 200,000 people, attracted by the beauty of its reed and mud landscapes, the wide range of recreational activities on offer and the rice-based gastronomy that its people have been perfecting for centuries. But is it really all as beautiful as it seems?
If we investigate deeply, we discover that the problems are not few: it has many species in danger of extinction, the salinity of its water is increasing and there are more and more invasive species. Although there are so many problems, attempts are being made to solve some of them, since the Albufera is considered a marvel in Spain.
The species in danger of extinction in the Albufera are: the kentish plover, the common canastera and the common xatraquet. The main threats to these species are predation or the disappearance of eggs, the loss of their habitats due to recreational uses, urban pressure, agricultural occupation, the use of toxic pesticides or the entry of invasive species. All this has grown exponentially in the last century. Albufera workers have tried to solve the problem of invasive species with different methods: chemical, mechanical or even biological. These actions are having a positive impact, although further improvement is needed. The main types of invasive species are algae, arthropods and fish.

Cada año recibe más de 200.000 personas, atraídas por la belleza de sus paisajes de caña y barro, por la amplia oferta recreativa que ofrece y la gastronomía basada en arroces que hace siglos que sus pueblos están perfeccionando. Pero ¿realmente es todo tan bonito como parece?
Si investigamos profundamente, descubrimos que los problemas no son pocos: Tiene muchas especies en peligro de extinción, la salinidad de su agua está aumentando y cada vez hay más especies invasoras. Aunque haya tantos problemas se están intentando resolver algunos, puesto que la Albufera se considera una maravilla en España.
Las especies en peligro de extinción de la Albufera son: el chorlitejo patinegro, la canastera común y el xatraquet común. Las principales amenazas detectadas que sufren estas especies son la depredación o la desaparición de huevos, la pérdida de sus hábitats por usos recreativos, la presión urbanística, la ocupación agrícola, el uso de pesticidas tóxicos o la entrada de especies invasoras. Todo esto ha crecido exponencialmente en el último siglo. Los trabajadores de la Albufera han intentado resolver el problema de las especies invasoras con diferentes métodos: químicos, mecánicos o incluso biológicos. Estas acciones están teniendo un impacto positivo, aunque para mejorar más tienen que seguir. Los principales tipos de especies invasoras son algas, artrópodos y peces.
No todo el mundo sabrá que en el pasado la Albufera fue de agua salada, a causa de la amenaza del cambio climático y la subida del nivel se habla que podríamos volver a esa Albufera salada del pasado. Thanks to the Pujol, Perelló and Perellonet gorges, the water level has been controlled (with salt water) for years. But it is also predicted that the water surface will increase and with this, the wetland will become less and less fresh and because of this many species will end up becoming extinct due to the change of water.

· Hay muchas especies invasoras que amenazan el destino de las especies de la Albufera. Cada año la Albufera recibe más de doscientos mil visitantes, tanto para ver los arrozales como para ver su fauna.
· Y, por último, la superficie de la Albufera está disminuyendo cada año. Hace 400 o 300 años la Albufera disfrutaba de 30.000 hectáreas de terreno, mientras que ahora tan solo tiene 21.120 hectáreas.
Con toda esta información nuestra conclusión es que:
Las especies invasoras pueden deshacerse con métodos químicos y biológicos, también dando una buena concienciación y educación en la población sobre no llevar nuevas especies y sobre todo un estudio con las fuentes suficientes para analizar cómo ayudar a las especies autóctonas.
Obviamente tenemos que ayudar al medio ambiente, porque el cambio climático está extinguiendo especies a la Albufera. Gracias a las gargantas de Pujol, el Perelló y el Perellonet se ha estado controlando el nivel del agua (con agua salada) desde hace años. Pero también se prevé que la superficie del agua aumente y con esto, el humedal será cada vez menos dulce y por culpa de esto muchas especies acabarán extinguiéndose por el cambio de agua.

This will mean that the whole school will be sensitised, so they will help us to organise campaigns to influence the rest of the population.
On this excursion we collected the waste generated. In addition, there have been people who have seen us, have empathised with the Albufera and have started to help us. In addition to doing our bit, we have made a few more people do their bit too.
We have spoken on social networks about the problems of the Albufera. With this we have also raised awareness among the population. But apart from people from Spain or Valencia, we can also raise awareness among people from other countries to help the natural space in their localities. We have campaigned to make people aware of the need to not use or to reduce the use of CO₂ emitting devices. This has the same purpose as the previous one. Instead, the aim is not to raise awareness on a global level and a local level. This will reach fewer people, but in the Albufera.
We have given talks to the first and second year classes to raise awareness among the pupils.
Hemos creado un cartel para colgar en Valencia sobre el estado de la Albufera para que la gente se entere de su situación. Así concienciaremos a la gente de la ciudad para no generar tantos residuos.
Hemos propuesto organizar una excursión a l’Albufera en el instituto para que los alumnos se den cuenta que tienen que cuidarla, así también se concienciará a las familias. Esto sirve para dos cosas, una de ellas es que en la misma excursión los alumnos recogerán residuos generados, así ayudarán a disminuir la contaminación. La otra de ellas es concienciar a los alumnos y a sus familias. Esto comportará que todo el instituto esté sensibilizado, por lo tanto, nos ayudarán a organizar campañas para influir en el resto de la población.
En esta excursión hemos recogido los residuos generados. Con esto hemos aportado nuestro granito de arena. Además, ha habido gente que nos ha visto, han empatizado con la Albufera y se han puesto a ayudarnos. A parte de aportar nuestro granito de arena hemos hecho que unas cuantas personas más también lo aporten.
Hemos hablado en las redes sociales de los problemas de la Albufera. Con esto también hemos concienciado a la población. Pero a parte de la gente de España o Valencia, también podemos concienciar a gente de otros países para que ayuden al espacio natural de sus localidades.
Hemos hecho una campaña para concienciar a la gente con la finalidad de que no utilicen o disminuyan el uso de aparatos que emiten CO₂. Esto tiene a misma finalidad que el anterior. En cambio, la finalidad no es concienciar a nivel mundial, sino a nivel local. Esto llegará a menos gente, pero así hemos concentrado nuestras fuerzas para ayudar a la Albufera.
Hemos hecho charlas por las clases de primero y segundo de la eso para sensibilizar a los alumnos.
