Research question

Why is there an increased population growth of mushrooms in our area?

Summary of the project
Mushroom substrate at different temperatures

What do mushrooms need to grow? Mushrooms grow best in dark, moist, and warm conditions.
They require oxygen and water to grow. They often spring directly from dead trees and plants.
They can be grown in dark or light conditions but not in direct sunlight. Small mushrooms can
grow in a day while medium or large mushrooms can grow in about 3-4 days. The life cycle of a
mushroom is 1-2 days or up to many years.

Main results and Conclusions
Results table of temperatures in different locations

Results: The weight of the mushrooms in the polytunnel was higher than the mushrooms inside in
the dark, cold, and dry area. The weight of the mushroom in the warmer and moist conditions in
the polytonal were 600grams. 110grams more than the mushrooms grow inside in the cooler less
moist condition
Analysed: This means that the warmer and more moist conditions helped the mushroom grow bag
outside j. The poly tunnel produces a higher yield compared to the mushrooms inside.
Conclusion: Mushrooms in warm and moist conditions grow quicker and there are more
mushrooms grown in these conditions. We can conclude that as temperatures keep rising and
humidity level are high will will have lots more mushrooms growing in our forest and gardens
during the autumn months.

What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
Images of mushroom growth when subject to different temperatures.

We have learned that warm and moist conditions make mushrooms grow a lot more rapidly. We
noticed this during Autumn 2022 when we visited Emo Court and our local Brittas forest.
Yes, we felt we did answer our question. We now know the increased growth of mushrooms is due
to the increased temperature and moisture.
If we were to repeat this investigation again, we would carry it out over different seasons to see if
they would change our results. Also, we would set up more than two experiments and subject
them to different climates such as warm and no rain/water, cold and water or warm dark and
water to see would this cause more or less growth.
Solution- This project proved that there has been an increase in temperature in resent year.
Solutions to this is to cut down on what is causing the rise in temperature. Reduce the use of fossil
fuels, such as peat and oil. Invest in clean sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydro energy
as these source do not produce carbon dioxide, sulphur and nitrogen
