Project title: Finding the temperature of the River Moy over the month of February
Team: Team Salmon
St Muredach’s College Ballina Ireland 6 Student’s age: 16-17 years old
Is rising temperatures having an effect on the salmon in the River Moy
Rivers and many more water sources are essential for aquatic life. The temperature of the water has to be perfect for the creatures to survive and maintain a healthy habitat to reproduce / grow. As people continue to be careless with pollution, the weather gets warmer and it can drastically change the future of aquatic life. Our local river is called the River Moy. It begins at the foot of the Ox Mountains in Co. Sligo and it continues on for another 110km. The river enters Co. Mayo near Swinford before passing through Foxford and it then heads for Ballina. It flows out to the Atlantic Ocean from the Killala Bay. The river is traditionally known for its production of salmon and it is an essential symbol in the town of Ballina.
We analysed the temperature of the river Moy in the month of February, we observed that the temperature of the Moy over February did not change by more than 1 degree, we now know that the salmon in the River Moy are not being affected as much as we thought but it is still important that we try and keep the River Moy in the perfect condition for the salmon.
After the research and effort we have put into this project we have a great appreciation for the River Moy and what it is doing for Ballina, we will continue to monitor the temperature of the Moy, we will try to promote preservation of the Moy.
Projects are created by the teams and they take the full responsibility of the shared data.
