Science is calling us and that is why we have decided to apply the Scientific Method and the possibilities offered by Aerospace Science to provide answers to an everyday problem that we are part of, and which can be related to climate change and environmental health. After observing the increase in traffic at arrival and departure times in the vicinity of the Institute, we concluded that a large proportion of the students, teachers and other staff of the centre come by car. Satellite images indicate an increase in CO and H2C=O levels over the course of the school year and following a vehicle count we estimate annual emissions of around 40 tonnes per school year, in addition to those from a nearby industrial estate. We propose measures to try to minimise the emissions that depend on our IES.

Using the on-line carbon footprint calculator we estimate CO2 emissions between the entrance and exit of the IES to be approximately 40000 kg of CO2 per school year. We consider that these emissions are not the only ones responsible for the increase of CO and H2C=O in the atmosphere of our town throughout the school year, as there are other emitters such as the industrial estate “Juncaril”, but our contribution is important and we can act on it.

Utilizando la calculadora on-line de huella de carbono estimamos unas emisiones de CO2 entre la entrada y salida del IES aproximada a casi 40000 kg de CO2 por curso escolar.
