Is the air in my neighborhood polluted? How can I check? Is there a simple way to do this?

Pollution is a big problem for everyone. Air pollution can harm health and interfere with respiratory allergies, a major cause of hospitalization for young children. What causes air pollution? Are there more polluted and less polluted neighborhoods?

Each team member lives in a different neighborhood. Each one will be able to make measurements, photograph and record all the information, completing the spreadsheet and making a daily comparison of their results. The photographic report will be very important to make the comparative analysis.

“How is the air we breathe in our house?” Nearly 90% of deaths from air pollution occur in low- and middle-income countries, which for the most part do not have the resources to monitor air quality. For this reason, UN Environment has developed a revolutionary and accessible new device to monitor air quality. That is why we have made the first versions of the product available to the public. Our hope is that this device, which costs almost 100 times less than the most used solutions, will revolutionize air quality monitoring in developing countries.

Everything can be evaluated so that it is an important data to be questioned. “How can I help to modify?” Planting trees, changing habits inside the home, remodeling the environment.

Air monitoring in Rio de Janeiro is carried out by the MonitorAr monitoring station. There are 4 seasons, but we have to decide how we can contribute, because we live far from these seasons. Monitoring can be done at home with simple experiences. These will be used to carry out our project and will help us to better understand the problem. We will use the experiences of the “Understanding the Earth through Space I” Kit from ESERO PT. He has many experiences and the technical files will help us a lot. Excellent material.

The group has a good idea and is well on its way to making its project! They will have a lot of information to observe and work on. Creating a simple way for everyone in the community to observe the amount of particles / air pollution can lead people to change certain habits and improve the quality of the air they breathe.
