Research question
How does climate change affect the situation of the lagoons near our town, such as Laguna de Medina and Laguna Salada?
Summary of the project
In the municipal district of our town, Jerez de la Frontera, we have the largest lagoon in the province of Cádiz, the Laguna de Medina. This wetland has always been of great interest to the inhabitants of our city. Formerly it was used as a privileged place for hunting and today it is a protected natural area, a place for walking and bird watching that is especially appreciated by the population. This summer the lagoon has completely dried up, a phenomenon that had already happened many years ago, but which is unusual. We want to analyze the evolution of the lagoon’s water sheet in recent years and of the surrounding vegetation. We will also analyze the situation of another nearby lagoon, Laguna Salada, in the neighboring town of Puerto de Santa María.
Main results and Conclusions
Poster of our research (in Spanish)
The surface covered by water in both lagoons has been decreasing during the last five years, completely drying up last year, 2021.
These lagoons feed exclusively on rainwater. A relationship is observed between a lower amount of rain in recent years with a decrease in the water surface in both lagoons.
What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
We will show the results to the educational community, participating in a science fair. We will try to make people aware of this environmental problem.
We will try to visit these places and check how much water they have.
