Team: Até à última gota
AEJBV São Brás de Alportel Portugal 5 Student’s age: 14-15 years old
Research question
How tolerable is it to waste the little water we have?
Summary of the project
Example of waste of water
In recent years, water has become a scarce commodity due to problems such as climate change and poor management.
This project allows information on water waste in São Brás de Alportel. Several online research on the subject was carried out and some specific books were consulted.
Main results and Conclusions
Comparison between temperature and rainfall evolution in S.Brás de Alportel
Over the years, the temperature has increased, unlike precipitation, so there have been periods of severe droughts and less water available to be used for human and animal consumption. By conducting a quiz z for students of the 3rd and 4th year, it was possible to conclude that they know the value of the water but still do not know for sure how / when they should use it.
What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
awareness-raising actions
An experimental activity was developed that consisted of the filtration of water through a coffee filter that, in turn, after filtration, kept certain sediments in it, thus initiating the water cleaning process, as happens in installations that perform this process, one of which the ETAR (Wastewater Treatment Plant).
Awareness-raising activities were also carried out with interactive games and quizzes, whose target were children of the 1st cycle, more specifically 3rd and 4th year of schooling. These activities warned of the risks of waste, but also of the correct forms of consumption. Finally, pamphlets were distributed by the children and teachers of the 1st cycle with a message of awareness of the theme and posters were distributed in the village of S. Brás de Alportel.
