Project title: The air of our city Volos

Team: Air Detectives

Chaidariou 12   Volos   Greece   10 Student’s age: 12-13 years old, 14-15 years old

Our team is going to monitor the air pollution (especially microparticles) of our city in order to investigate and measure the sources of the problem.

Volos is one of the largest ports in Greece. Besides, some large industrial units are in operation nowadays. A lot of households depend on wood and biomass heating systems. Moreover, a major traffic congestion problem is observed. As a result, the air quality across the region continues to deteriorate. The air pollution measurements monitored by P.E Magnisia indicate that microparticles continue to be on the increase.
Our school has installed appropriate measurement station to monitor the air quality in our area.
Samples have been compared with ESA measurements in Thessaloniki. The period of comparison lasts from 21/12/22 to 4/4/23.

The comparison showed that the air quality problem in Volos is greater than Thessaloniki. Besides the problem seems to be bigger during the Christmas holidays.
Our team also accessed an other airquality platform (aqicn.org). That platform provides access to 4 different measurement stations in Volos. The compared their samples. The conclutions was that all of the stations provide similar sample fluctuations. On the other hand the intensity of the samples was not the same. As a result we need a lot of stations in one city in order to describe the air polution problem.
Our team also concluded that there is direct correlation between air polution and humidity.

For the future, we plan to build our own measurement station using arduino in order to compare the values with other professional stations.
We also plan to to take measurements from different city spots in order to prove the pollution sources.
