Research question

How long does it take for an ecosystem to recover after a fire?

Summary of the project
NDVIs of the July 2022 fire area. Images of the area affected by the 2009 fire.

In July last year, 2022, unusually high temperatures led to a fire in the so-called “Cerro del Castillo” (Special Area of Conservation, SAC) located between the towns of Collado Mediano and Becerril de la Sierra, close to the Navacerrada reservoir, near the Guadarrama National Park. We have investigated the level of severity of the fire and the extent to which it affected air quality and the quantity and quality of water in the reservoir, as well as the biodiversity of the area, and estimated how long it takes for a forest and its typical environment to regenerate at these latitudes. Our field work consisted of visiting the area to observe and take photographs in order to assess whether different areas of the fire burned with the same severity. To do this, we used the method developed by Silva Cardoza et al., 2021 based on the percentages of canopy flare-up.
For our project we have analysed PNOA aerial images and Sentinel satellite images from the EO Browser website. With them we obtained the differential vegetation index (NDVI) to distinguish heights and study regeneration in the area. We also used the measurement tool included in the application to determine the area affected by the fire, as well as the concentration of chlorophyll and sediment in the reservoir to estimate whether the water in the reservoir was affected by the fire.
To estimate greenhouse gas emissions, we have used the formula given in the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.
In addition, in order to study the regeneration capacity of the vegetation, we have taken into account the slope of the terrain, observing it in situ and calculating the slope from a contour map of the area.

Main results and Conclusions
Estimate of the amount of greenhouse gases produced by the fire. Fire severity. Affected area. Slope of the terrain.

To calculate the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the fire, we measured the area of the burned area in the sentinel satellite images with EO Browser, dividing the area into smaller areas and then adding them together to minimise errors. We estimated the percentages of forest and shrubland that burned from in situ observation of the terrain. The values of the quantities are shown in the table below.

We have evaluated the severity of the fire, according to the crown of the trees, detecting various levels of severity as can be seen in the image.
There are various factors that influence the regeneration capacity of the affected area, such as the slope of the terrain, the orientation with respect to the sun, whether it is a shady or sunny area and humidity. The predominant forest type in the Cerro del Castillo area is Scots pine. Studies indicate that natural regeneration is favoured if they receive 35% of radiation in the open air (González-Martínez and Bravo (1999). We have estimated, from a contour map of the area, the slope of the terrain, obtaining a slope of 43% in a large part of the affected area (see figure).

With the EO-Browser tools we have obtained the normalised vegetation indices (NDVI) shown in the figure. We have used orthoimages from the IGN to appreciate the regeneration in the area since there was another fire in 2009 in the same area (shown in the figure).

With EO Browser we observed no changes in the surface of the reservoir and no significant changes in chlorophyll and sedimentation levels before and after the fire. We believe, by examining the orography of the terrain, that ash could have reached the water by rainwater runoff into the reservoir.

What’s Next? Actions to make a difference and help lessen the problem
Photos of the day of the fire in July 2022. Photos of the affected area 9 months later. Restoration of the land with forest fences.

This project has served to raise awareness of the devastating effects that a fire can have on the environment. Not only have greenhouse gases been emitted that contribute to worsen the problem of climate change, but a Special Area of Conservation has been devastated.

Many factors can affect the regeneration of the affected area. From studies already carried out on forest regeneration and analysing images of Cerro del Castillo, we can see that a Scots pine forest can take between 15 and 50 years to regenerate. The slope of the terrain is critical, which is why they have incorporated fajinas in areas with steep slopes. The fire on Cerro del Castillo has not only affected the flora but also the fauna, especially the birds (which help the regeneration of the flora by dispersing the seeds). It is possible, although we have not been able to estimate this, that the fire also affected the quality of the water in the reservoir.
We believe that there is a need for greater dissemination by the bodies responsible for assessing and restoring an environment affected by fire (town councils, autonomous communities, forestry agents). Greater awareness of the dangers associated with a fire necessarily implies greater preventive action on the part of society as a whole. We plan to contact these organisations, and those responsible for the Navacerrada reservoir water treatment plant, to request more information on the real effects that this fire has had on their ecosystem. We will also help to disseminate this information through internal conferences in our school. We would like to thank ESERO for the opportunity to work on this interesting project and the expert researcher Lucrecia Pettinari from the University of Alcalá for her invaluable help in its development.
