Climate Detectives Projects 2020-2021

Project topic: Flora & Fauna

Project title: The birds that live near my house

Team: Girls in Science (Guest Team)

CENOM   Rio de Janeiro   Brazil   12 12Student’s age: 8-9 years old, 10-11 years old, 12-13 years old, 14-15 years old

Research question

The birds of a region can differentiate due to their habitat. What are the impacts of pollution and the lack of vegetation?

Summary of the project
The birds in my window

One of the major problems of climate change is the impact on fauna and flora, which is often difficult to perceive and observe.
Knowing the impact on species is essential to help us understand the changes that are occurring: what species are decreasing or disappearing? What species are stable? These questions are important.
The climate, the lack of rain, the deforestation, the lack of incentive to plant trees causes a decrease in these birds.

Main results and Conclusions
Birds at night

Resources will be used to monitor the birds and their daily lives, such as: photographs, recording of their songs and filming of their flights. All resources to be used will be monitored and supervised by the teacher by sending them via WhatsApp and emails.

A photographic report will be prepared with an account of experiences on each observation with date and time.

“The birds that chirp here do not chirp like there …” This is a poem by Gonçalves Dias. Will we be able to monitor the birds in our region and catalog their name, habitat, song and flight? Through this observation, we will be able to highlight the species that are being threatened and how we can help and publicize the species of a region. Each bird photographed will be identified. We will thus be able to know the region where they live, their song, their flight and start a campaign to plant new trees that can improve the climate and serve as a place for birds to make their nest

What’s Next? Actions to help lessen the problem
I can contribute to preserve the birds

We will use the site: https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browser/. we will search for satellite images from several days and see if there have been recent changes in the locations, tree felling is usually easy to see on satellite images, especially when done on a large scale

As it is a complex subject try to focus on only 1 or 2 species / types of birds relevant in your region. Do some research on the local fauna and what kind of birds there are and choose the ones that your group frequently observes. Ask in your community if you think the number of birds has increased or decreased. Try to relate what they indicate (lack of rain, deforestation) with what they will observe.
