This image was taken by ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet on board of the International Space Station. It shows a Spanish landscape speckled by fields in spring time. First crops start to grow, providing the first shades of green in the landscape. Throughout Spain’s history, agricultural landowners would often divide their properties among their male heirs. Generation after generation, land would be further fragmented, resulting in the millions of small plots found across the country today. With poor soils and only 10% of the land excellent for cultivation, agricultural production is limited in Spain. Rising temperatures due to climate change, pose an even bigger threat to the already dry land.
